Eighteenth century Scottish political thinker Andrew Fletcher said, “Give me the making of the songs of a nation and I care not who writes its laws.” Who cares what an eighteenth century thinker says? I think he was onto a valuable truth that no nation will ever be able to escape. In short, I think Fletcher was saying that the songs of a nation unmask the deep-rooted beliefs that govern our actions. Taking it to a more personal level, the songs of a heart uncover belief, and belief determines actions. No nation will ever be able to rise above the thinking that governs its music, nor will any person rise above the songs of his/her heart. “When their hearts turned away, they would no longer hear or obey His voice. When they were no longer hearing or obeying His voice clearly and exclusively, their hearts would be drawn away from Him, and they would then be listening to other voices seeking to take them away from their God. If they followed these other gods they would then begin to worship them. Ultimately what happens is: What you begin to worship you begin to serve.” I think Henry Blackaby and Fletcher were both on to very similar concepts, concepts that in part describe a little of why I am writing this tonight.
There has been no song in my heart! My silence was telling a story of the bareness of my soul, yet I was deafened to its cry because I was hearing other things more loudly. I just read Hannah’s song in 1 Samuel 2 and was able to pry into her heart through the very song she proclaimed. Wow! The song of Moses and Israel pierced me as they celebrated their exodus from Egypt in Exodus 15. Have you ever listened to the song of Deborah and Barak the day Israel destroyed Jabin king of Canaan in Judges 5? Have you ever listen to The Magnificant as Mary bears her soul after believing baby Jesus was in her womb in Luke 1:46-55? The Psalms are filled with David’s crying out to the Lord, Lamentations with Jeremiah’s mourning. The Bible is filled with the songs of those pouring out their souls. So, where is my song? Oh, let me tell you about the new Apple computer we just got with a G4 processor and all the latest music and video gadgets available. What about Jesus he does not change! Or I could tell you about our new cannon digital camera with 5.1 mega pixels and 4x optical zoom. “What about me” Jesus says! What about all the new toys on our new ranch, I could tell you all about them. Or I could tell you about Jacob and Esau our rams that cover our Barbado sheep flock. Did you know that some people will pay a lot of money to hunt those rams because they make such great mounts? It’s true! What about Jesus, He never changes and everything mentioned above does. So, what is your song? I know what mine has been lately. And what I begin to worship I eventually serve. I sat down tonight at the piano and for the first time in months played, not out of necessity but out of desire, and what came from my fingers was the song of my heart this night. And the words that go along with the familiar tune brought tears to my dry eyes. For at that moment, “I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold I'd rather be His than have riches untold I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands I'd rather be led by His nail-pierced hand, Than to be the king of a vast domain, or be held in sin’s dread sway I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.” Oh that my song would perpetually be those precious words of Rhea Miller. "Give me the making of the songs of a nation (or of a heart) and I care not who writes its laws (I will show you who he/she worships and serves).” What is your song?

Thanks for sharing Darin....I was kind of wondering why you didn't just sit and play the piano and sing when you were up here for Christmas...but thought that maybe it was because you now had a piano of your own......glad to hear that you have your song back! What a good challenge to me too....what's my song? You are so right, there are times when it is gone...and then again, those times when it literally just bursts forth!! Blessed be the name of the Lord! MamaB
